Written in 1988, recorded in 1995 in my home studio.
It describes the time I met Suzy Bogguss before she became famous, when we were both traveling the U.S., trying to get somewhere with our music. The song goes on to describe how it felt to hear her on the radio a few years later, while I was still playing local clubs trying to get noticed.
Some say I sound bitter, but that's not the case at all. I was happy for her, and recognized the reality of the situation. Not everyone gets to be a star.
lyrics
== Suzy (Your Song on the Radio) ==
I remember we met down at Lena's Café,
A folksinger's dream just off Broadway;
Saratoga springs, the summer of '84.
A country-raised lady from Illinois;
A wandering, lonely minstrel boy.
A fleeting glimpse of something, and nothing more.
Ah, but time has passed, I've found a home
Here in Nova Scotia with a wife of my own.
I guess one of us had to hit the big time;
I guess one of us had to shine.
[CHORUS]
Suzy, whenever you sing it to me,
the memories blow right through me.
I listen every day, you know,
to hear your song on the radio.
~/~
I came home one night from the Holiday Inn
After playin' to an empty room again;
Turned on the Country station – my mistake.
For there was that woman from Illinois
Singin' to this tired old minstrel boy;
Another reminder of a dream that didn't take.
Ah, but I'm content with my simple life,
And a Cape Breton girl to be my wife.
I guess every star's not the brightest of all.
I guess some of them have to fall.
[CHORUS]
Suzy, whenever you sing it to me,
the memories blow right through me.
I listen every day, you know,
to hear your song on the radio.
